A study of death based on Heb. 9:27

1.    Heb. 9:27 is very specific about death; what does it say?  __________________________________.

2.    People attempt to avoid death in many ways, some of which are:  _____________________________.

3.    Death is a Biblical subject, one about which we should be familiar.

4.    No one who reads the Bible can miss the fact that we are repeatedly reminded of man’s mortality.

5.    We can use this subject to to teach people.

6.    To do this we must be able to define what it is.

7.     The absence or withdrawal of breath and the life force that makes movement, metabolism, and interrelation with others possible.

8.    This definition is quite consistent with Ps. 104:29b and Job 34:14-15 – READ.

9.    The Bible has some interesting things to say about our lives.

10.  Job 14:5 says, __________________________________________________.

11.  Ps. 139:16 is even more specific.

12.  Man came “from the dust of the ground” (Gen. 2:7).  In death man’s physical this happens again.

13.  Although this is the fate of man’s physical body, there is his eternal spirit.

14.  This part of man is described in some very interesting ways.

15.  Gen. 37:35 – READ. Jacob spoke of going and “seeing” Joseph.

16.  Since he did not know the disposition of his son’s body, how could that be true?

17.  Consider, too, 1 Sam. 28:19 – what are we told in these verses?  _________________________.

18.  Since Saul was not buried immediately (1 Sam. 31:9-11), how did he joined Samuel the next day?

19.  People in the Old Testament drew a distinction between the physical body and an on-going spirit.

20.  There was a “separation” of body and spirit, not a cessation of who the person was.

21.  Death was not God’s ideal will; heaven created a “tree of life” and gave man access to it.

22.  Through sin death is a terrible and on-going consequence.

23.  As long as the earth stands it will affect each and every person in one way or another.

24.  One of our obligations is to understand and accept death as a reality.

25.  What illustration is found in 2 Sam. 14:14?

26.  Death is seen as so powerful it is pictured as having __________________ (Ps. 9:13).

27.  In the New Testament we find even more information about death, some of which is good news.

28.  Heb. 2:14-15 and 2 Tim. 1:10 – READ.

29.  Jesus has _______________________ (Acts 2:24).

30.  He has been has been “__________________________” (Heb. 2:9).

31.  He has the _______________________________ (Rev. 1:18).

32.  When a Christian dies, they are portrayed as ________________ (1 Thess. 4:14).

33.  Roman had pictures of a skeleton with the inscription “Know thyself” (do not miss any pleasure).

34.  When pleasure could no longer be enjoyed, pagans felt like nothing was left.

35.  Death helps draw a radical distinction between the saved and unsaved.

36.  To make it tolerable many unsaved people rely upon elaborate ceremonies and memorials.

37.  Christians have something far, far better – 1 Thess. 4:13.
