Hupakouo, a word often translated “obey” in the New Testament

 

This term may be considered one of the New Testament’s most key terms.

It is found 21 times; the books it appear in range from Matthew to 1 Peter.

A foundation for understanding the word begins in the life of Jesus.

Repeatedly in the above passages do we find an “inferior” and a “superior.”

**IN EVERY PLACE THIS WORD IS USED, IT IS NOT APPLIED TO WIFE/HUSBAND RELATIONSHIP.

A different word is used for the marital bond in places like Tit. 2:5.

 

This word should make perfect sense to us:  sheep are to obey shepherd, branch obeys vine.
